CHAPTER 20
Wade
We went to war.
* * *
Why the hell did I follow Brooke? When Guerra had mentioned her fatherâs name, Brooke had jumped up as if the devil himself had appeared in front of her. All of usâwell, except Guerra and his wifeâknew immediately whose name had been mentioned and what brought about this sudden mood shift in Brooke. But when all eyes fell on me, I decided to follow her.
Since when did I become the chosen one to play the part of taking care of someone?
Even as Yuliaâpresumably in a fit of feminine supportive instinct - went after Brooke, Roryâs and Haloâs looks continued to challenge me to do my job. What a damn job?
Well, it wasnât that I didnât understand her shock, or whatever it was. Fuck, yes, I felt sorry for her, but stillâ¦I wasnât the one in our group whose shoulder was suitable for crying upon.
Well, anyway, Rory and Halo and even our host continued to stare at me, so I had stood up with a sigh. âAll right!â
What else could I do?
And in the end, it had been the right thing to do. Not just for Brooke, but for me. For us. Because there was still a lot to putty between us. We had talked things out. Brooke had forgiven me, but until we could finally clear up the shit with her false suspicion, it would certainly take some more time, and through situations like these, we could slowly rebuild our mutual trust.
Of course, my comforting her also ended up us falling all over each other, if Yulia had not intervened with the announcement of dinner. What a pity! It was high time for kisses, for touching, for giving in to the need toâ¦love her.
What I had said to Brooke on the plane was the absolute truth: I fucking needed her. The desire to need someone, to need a woman, was new to me, and I couldnât deny it any longer. And Iâd had more than enough time to figure it out. So it probably wasnât the worst idea to take every opportunity to get closer to Brooke. I needed her warmth, the feel of her nipples rising under my fingertips, and her sweet moan in my ear. I needed her to perk up when I touched her, when I thrust into her, our bodiesâ
Well, not now, not here. Unfortunately! Yuliaâs throat clearing had brought us back to the here and now. All right, maybe it wasnât the worst thing, even if my first impulse had been a different one.
It wasnât dinner that brought my sense of duty back on track, either. We were on the starting block of a race that could turn so much of the unfinished business around in one full swoop. If our plan succeeded, we could finally close this crappy chapter. We had to finish the fucking traitor, Lawrence and while we were at it, best case scenario, asshole Leary right along with him. We would have some certainty as to whether he had commissioned my fatherâs murderâand then we could get our fucking revenge.
